To Face (Façade)
A window can open and close. We can look in or out. Windows are the threshold between one space and another. They make visible what might otherwise go unseen.
As much as these pieces are about atmosphere, light, surface, symmetry, space and the experience of standing face to face with these buildings (the subject), my work also attempts to draw attention to these very same aspects as they are experienced in confronting the paintings themselves (the unique object).
While the imagery should relate to some traditional interpretations of beauty and landscape painting (ruin and light), the compositions should simultaneously court minimalist aesthetics and de-familiarizing aspects of the uncanny (symmetry and the double). In both instances, body and vision are centered and balanced by the rectangle.
Inverse recognition occurs when reality (signifier) reminds us of a painting (sign). These kinds of moments fascinate me, and like a visual pun or aesthetic double entendre, my work subtly but persistently alludes to similar slippages or overlaps between the experience of reality and the experience of painting.
